TROUBLE SHOOTING

Why is my transformer short circuiting?

When mounting the toroidal transformer using the neoprene washer and metal plate configuration, do not over tighten the centre bolt. This could place too much pressure on the windings and a turn-to-turn short could develop, eventually burning out the transformer.

My fuses are blowing constantly. Why?

The constant blowing of fuses could be due to the inrush current produced by the transformer. Always use a time delay fuse (sometimes called a slow blow fuse).

Why is my transformer overloading?

This could be because of 1 of 2 things:

  • the transformer may have become too hot from being overloaded, or
  • inadequate ventilation around the transformer because the temperature switch built into the transformer is cycling (if the transformer is turning on and off automatically).

To rectify this problem, check that the transformer is not in a confined space. If it is, you will need to create a better flow of air around it.  You should also check that the load does not exceed the rated current on the transformer.

My transformer is overheating. Why and how can I stop it from doing this?

If the toroidal transformer is turning on and off automatically, it may be in a confined space where there is insufficient cool air circulating around it. The transformer should be moved to an area in which cool air can circulate more freely.

Why is there electrical noise coming from my transformer?

Stray magnetic fields can interfere with sensitive electronic equipment. To minimize this interference, a magnetic shield needs to be placed around the transformer during the manufacturing process. It is extremely difficult to add a shield once the transformer has been made.

Why would there be an open circuit coming from my transformer?

This can occur if the input or the output cables are not correctly connected to the primary or the secondary windings, resulting in a poor connection.

What dimmer should I use with my transformer?

Torema Australia has tested a range of dimmers by leading suppliers. Not all were found to be compatible with our toroidal transformer, depending on whether they are leading or trailing edge.
